Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary established in 1983 on the strong recommendation of Dr. Salim Ali, is the first bird sanctuary in Kerala, it is one of india's most important birding destinations an is widely regarded as a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is located on the northern banks of the Periyar River, Near Kothamangalam in Eranakulam District, Kerala.

The sanctuary spreads across an area of 25,16 square kilometers.
Topography
Typical of the Western Ghats, the sanctuary has gently undulating terrain, with elevations ranging between 35 and 523 meters above mean sea level. the highest point in the sanctuary is Njayapilli Mudi.
