Birding in Munnar
Located in the high ranges of the Western Ghats, Munnar is one of Kerala’s finest destinations for high-altitude birding. Surrounded by misty mountains, shola forests, grasslands, tea plantations, and deep valleys, Munnar offers a unique habitat for many rare and endemic birds of South India.
The cool climate and untouched forest patches make the region ideal for birdwatching throughout the year. Birders visiting Munnar often search for iconic Western Ghats endemics such as the Nilgiri Flycatcher, Black-and-orange Flycatcher, White-bellied Blue Robin, Kerala Laughingthrush, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Nilgiri Pipit, and the beautiful Malabar Whistling Thrush. Mixed hunting flocks moving through the shola forests provide exciting opportunities to observe flycatchers, laughingthrushes, warblers, sunbirds, and woodpeckers at close range.
Popular birding locations around Munnar include Eravikulam National Park, Pampadum Shola National Park, Rajamalai, Vattavada, Top Station, and the forested slopes near Marayoor and Chinnar. Each area supports different elevations and habitats, making Munnar an excellent destination for both casual birdwatchers and serious bird photographers.
Munnar is especially attractive for bird photography because of its scenic landscapes, soft mountain light, and accessible trails. Early morning birding walks often combine breathtaking sunrise views with the sounds of endemic birds echoing through the valleys. During migration seasons, several winter visitors can also be seen in the grasslands and wetlands around the hills.
Beyond birding, the region is rich in wildlife and natural beauty. Visitors may also encounter Nilgiri Tahr, Indian Gaur, elephants, giant squirrels, butterflies, orchids, and flowering mountain plants unique to the Western Ghats ecosystem.
