In addition to the Salim Ali Trail and Bazza Trail near the sanctuary entrance, we regularly visit less-disturbed birding locations that provide a more peaceful and rewarding birding experience.
Site selection is based on seasonality, recent sightings, weather conditions, and participant interests. This flexible approach ensures optimal birding opportunities on every outing.
Bird Photography & Hide Sessions
For bird photographers, we can arrange dedicated bird hide photography sessions for select species. These sessions are ideal for those seeking closer, more controlled opportunities to photograph birds in their natural habitat.
Tripods and appropriate photographic equipment are recommended for hide sessions.
Night Birding at Thattekad
Thattekad is also well known for its nocturnal wildlife. Night birding sessions can be arranged for guests interested in observing nightjars, owls, and other nocturnal species.
These sessions are conducted with experienced naturalists and are scheduled based on weather conditions, habitat suitability, and recent sightings.

Daily Birding Schedule
A typical full-day birding program is divided into two sessions:
- Morning session: 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM
- Afternoon session: 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM
Guests return to the accommodation after the morning session for lunch and a short rest before resuming birding in the afternoon.
Most birding locations are within a 10–30 minute drive from the accommodation, although travel time may vary depending on the selected site.
Experienced Naturalist
All birding sessions are led by an experienced, English-speaking naturalist with extensive local knowledge of the birds, habitats, and birding locations around Thattekad.
Our approach emphasizes responsible birding, careful observation, and a high-quality experience for all participants.

Thattekad is easily accessible from Kochi and can be combined with other destinations in Kerala.

Munnar, located approximately 75 km from Thattekad, is an excellent addition to a Kerala birding itinerary.
Situated in the Western Ghats, Munnar offers a contrasting high-altitude environment with grasslands, tea plantations, shola forests, and mist-covered mountains. These habitats support several Western Ghats endemics and high-elevation bird species not typically found in the lowland forests of Thattekad.
